An hour without your phone: Make room for holiday moments

A limited experiment is easier than an all-encompassing digital ban.

A phone-free hour can make room for conversation, observation or simply doing nothing. It need not become a self-improvement project. Choose a suitable moment and agree which necessary functions must remain available.

Pick the moment sensibly

Arrival, an unfamiliar walk or an urgently expected call are poor choices. A safe, manageable situation is better: breakfast, time in the garden or a familiar short circuit.

If navigation or contact is needed, keep a device available for that purpose. A deliberate pause does not require making important information inaccessible. Agree on exceptions openly rather than using them secretly.

Have a simple alternative

A book, cards, conversation or looking through the window is enough. The hour does not have to be especially productive. Beside a lake, you might observe changing light; indoors, there is no need to invent a nature assignment.

Put devices beyond immediate reach and silence unnecessary notifications. An agreed duration prevents everybody repeatedly checking whether the break has finished. Choose an ordinary clock if the phone would otherwise become the timer you keep reopening.

Compare experiences without competition

Afterwards, discuss what felt pleasant or difficult. Some people miss music, others the camera, and others nothing at all. This does not measure anyone’s character or the quality of their holiday.

Repeat the pause only if it suits the group. Quiet attention and consideration are useful in the nature park regardless of phone use. Digital tools can also support an outing when they do not displace awareness of the situation and other people.

Common questions

Does everyone need to join?

A shared agreement helps, but compulsion is rarely useful. Discuss individual needs and necessary contact arrangements.

Can we take photographs during it?

Decide beforehand. One clear exception is better than repeatedly arguing about the rule during the pause.
