Accessible accommodation: ask for measurements and complete routes

Specific information is more useful than a broad assurance.

People need different conditions to use accommodation independently. The description accessible or low barrier offers little detail on its own. Write down your essential dimensions and routines, then examine the whole sequence from leaving the vehicle to reaching the entrance, bed, bathroom and shared spaces.

Start with personal requirements

Where relevant, measure the mobility aid and allow for turning or transferring as well. A nominally wide door is of limited use if a tight corner follows it. Ask for the clear opening with the door open and for threshold information. Details about one room must also fit the route leading to it.

Discuss bathroom and bedroom separately

Request clear space beside the bed, bed height and shower access details. A wall rail is not automatically a suitable support handle. Ask for a precise description of any assistance features. Current pictures with a visible scale supplement written measurements. Avoid relying on “it should be fine” where a particular feature is essential.

Use assessed information carefully

Reisen für Alle provides detailed information and criteria for different requirements. A label is a starting point for comparison rather than a universal guarantee for every guest. Read the individual report, consider its date and discuss outstanding questions with the provider. Include routes to parking, the dining table and your most important outings.

Keep information before committing

Retain confirmed measurements and pictures with the booking description. State explicitly which feature is essential for your stay. If the provider can offer only approximate details, ask whether reliable measurements can be taken. Any personal assistance also needs a specific agreement: a friendly contact does not establish that lifting assistance or accompaniment will be available at the property.

Common questions

Do step-free and wheelchair accessible mean the same?

No. Being step-free addresses only part of access; widths, clear spaces and fittings still matter.

What if essential measurements are missing?

Request a reliable measurement or choose an alternative with sufficiently detailed information.
