Wind beside a lake: choose your stopping place and programme accordingly

The most open view is not automatically the most comfortable place for a long pause.

Wind changes a lake outing even when nobody intends to enter the water. Paper blows about, light clothing feels cooler while sitting and an exposed stopping place may be less comfortable than the approach. Do not plan solely around an appealing photograph. Before leaving, check the forecast and any official German Weather Service warnings for the area you will visit.

Adapt the stay

In ordinary windy conditions, choose somewhere you can stand or sit comfortably without edging closer to the water. Keep away from slippery margins. A quieter spot on a permitted route may suit the day better than the widest view.

When a relevant weather warning applies, the issue is more than choosing a comfortable seat. Read the type of hazard and its validity period, then change or postpone the outing accordingly. Woodland is not a universally suitable fallback during a storm.

Secure loose belongings

Use closable food containers and put packaging back in your bag immediately. Rather than weighing down loose napkins with natural objects, consider avoiding the loose item altogether. A backpack is generally easier while walking than several light bags held separately.

Keep an extra layer accessible. If the group is sitting still for a long time, discuss whether a shorter pause followed by movement would be more comfortable. Nobody needs to endure an unpleasant spot simply because it was the original plan.

Water activities need separate decisions

Comfortable conditions on land do not establish that a boat trip or another water activity is suitable. Follow the relevant operator's instructions and ask them to explain the conditions. A potentially unavailable service should not hold the entire day hostage.

For a landscape visit, moving water, clouds and reeds can provide an interesting subject to observe. Photograph from the intended path and keep your hands free while walking onwards.

Common questions

Is a sunny weather symbol enough information?

No. Read wind details and official warnings for the place and time as well. A single symbol condenses very different conditions.

Is dense woodland a good alternative in strong wind?

Do not assume that it is. Storm warnings require attention to the stated hazards and may mean postponing the outing.
